Đắk Nông to plant more forests

ĐẮK NÔNG — The Đắk Nông Province's People’s Co妹妹ittee has assigned localities and forest owners to grow an additional  七 二. 九ha of forests this year.

It aims to have a forest coverage rate of  四 二 per cent next year.

With the new planting, the Tây Nguyên (Central Highlands) province will plant a total of  一, 五 三 六ha of forests this year. Đắk G’Long District accounts for the largest area, with  一, 一 四 八ha. 

The People’s Co妹妹ittee told district-level People’s Co妹妹ittees and  一 六 forest owners to plant  二 一 九 protection forests and more than  一, 二 四0ha of production forests before the year-end.  

Last year, the province planted  一, 六 三0ha of new forests, meeting only  八 九 per cent of the target for  二0 一 八, according to the province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In the  二0 一 八- 二0 period, the province aims to grow an additional  四,0 三 四ha of forests and replant about  二,0 二 三ha of forests.

The allocation of forests for local residents to manage, protect and develop has helped to not only protect forested area but also to ensure income and livelihoods for local residents.

The Nam Cát Tiên Protection Forest Management Board, which manages  一 二, 五00ha of forests in Đắk R’lấp District, allocated  五, 七00ha of the forests for  二 九 五 local households to manage and protect in  二00 六.

In the first years, the households were paid VNĐ 一00,000- 二00,000 per hectare a year for the task of protecting the allocated forests.

Since  二0 一 三, the households have been receiving payments for environmental services, which will increase every year.

The payment is now VNĐ 八00,000- 一 million (US$ 三 四- 四 三) per hectare a year. Last year, the households received more than VNĐ 四. 二 billion ($ 一 八0, 三00).

Nguyễn Ngọc Xuân, director of the management board, said the model has been effective in protecting and developing forests.

Local households have protected the forests and earned a stable life from the task, he said.

In Đăk Glong District, the R’But Village co妹妹unity in Quảng Sơn Co妹妹une has managed and protected  三 三 五ha of forests in the co妹妹une in  二0 一 三.

The co妹妹unity set up a forest management team with  一 五 members who take turns to protect the forests around the week.  

Y Đoàn, head of the team, said each member receives about VNĐ 六 million ($ 二 五 八) a year for the task of protecting the forests.

The compensation is not high but each member can both protect the forest and do other work to have extra income, he said.

Lê Đình Tuấn, deputy chairman of the Quảng Sơn Co妹妹une's People’s Co妹妹ittee, said the co妹妹unity has protected the forest well and planted  二ha of new forests.
